Indiana Seniors Lose Life Savings to Fake Cop Crypto Extortion Scheme
A couple in their mid-70s from West Lafayette, Indiana, lost several
How the Scam Started
The couple had just returned from a trip to India. Soon after, they began receiving calls from a man who claimed to be an agent with an Indian police department. He told them they were under investigation. To make the problem go away, he said they needed to send money using cryptocurrency.
The caller also warned them not to tell anyone about the investigation or the calls. This kept the couple silent while they sent money multiple times over several months.
Key Lessons from the Police
West Lafayette police explained why this was a scam from the start. Real police do not call people to say they are being investigated. Such calls only happen at the very end of a real case. Officers also never ask for money to stop an investigation. If someone has illegal money, police use court orders to take it, not phone calls.
This type of scam is not new. Similar tricks have hit Chinese students at Purdue University and many others around the country.
Why Unsolicited Calls Are Dangerous
Any unexpected call that asks for money or cryptocurrency should raise red flags right away. Scammers often use fear and secrecy to trick victims. They pretend to be from law enforcement or government agencies to sound official.
In this case, the couple sent money more than once before reporting the fraud to police. By then, the damage was done and most of the funds were gone.
How to Protect Yourself and Your Family
- Never send cryptocurrency or wire money because of a phone call.
- Always check with local police if someone claims to be an officer.
- Tell family members about suspicious calls right away.
- Block unknown numbers and report them to authorities.
Staying alert can stop these scams before they start. If you or someone you know gets a call like this, hang up and contact your local police department instead of sending any money.
