UMD Smith School Revives and Imperative Course for Innovators
The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is bringing back two key programs to help more people learn about blockchain and start new projects. These are the UMD Blockchain Business Accelerator and the Blockchain Business Imperative course. The move comes at a good time as interest in blockchain keeps growing across many industries.
Why the Relaunch Matters Now
Blockchain technology is changing how businesses handle money, track goods, and even work with artificial intelligence. The Smith School wants to lead in this area by offering practical training and support. The programs were first started in 2022 and are now updated to be easier for busy professionals to join.
The Blockchain Business Imperative Course
This is a six-week online program that anyone can take at their own pace. It covers important topics like zero-knowledge proofs, stablecoins, tokenizing real assets, and using blockchain in finance, supply chains, healthcare, and AI systems. Students spend about four to five hours each week on videos, tasks, and readings. At the end, they get a professional certificate from UMD. The course is fully asynchronous, so people can learn without fixed class times.
The UMD Blockchain Business Accelerator
After finishing the Imperative course, graduates and other founders can apply to this 60-day program. It helps them build working prototypes, improve their business ideas, and get advice from experts. Many past participants have started their own blockchain companies. Some now come back to mentor new people in the program. This creates a strong cycle of learning and giving back.
Connection to Maryland Blockchain Week
The relaunch lines up with Maryland Blockchain Week from July 13 to 17, 2026. Clinical Professor Tej Anand from the Smith School is speaking at the Maryland Blockchain Bootcamp at Capitol Technology University. His talk focuses on teaching young people about finance and blockchain to build better skills early.
Building a Full Blockchain Ecosystem
Along with these two programs, the Blockchain@UMD student club adds hands-on projects, industry talks, and career help for students. Together, the course, accelerator, and club form a clear path from learning the basics to starting real businesses. Dean Prabhudev Konana notes that blockchain now reaches into digital identity and many other fields. The school is also looking at ways to combine blockchain with AI for even stronger results.
