SBI Holdings Completes Coinhako Acquisition to Boost Southeast Asia Crypto Operations
SBI Holdings has taken a big step forward in the crypto world. The Japanese financial giant just finished buying Coinhako, a well-known crypto platform in Singapore. This move came after getting the green light from local regulators.
What Happened in the Deal
The
Coinhako has been around for a long time in Singapore. It serves more than 400,000 users. Its tech arm, Hako Technology Pte. Ltd., holds a Major Payment Institution license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore. This license helps the firm stay ahead in a market with tough rules.
Why This Move Matters Now
Rules for digital assets are getting stricter all over Asia. Buying a ready-made company with approvals and local users saves time and effort. Starting from zero to get a license can take years. SBI gains a fast track into the growing Southeast Asian market.
Other big names are also active in Singapore. Ripple, OKX, and Crypto.com have won approvals to grow. Robinhood entered by buying Bitstamp. The race among licensed crypto firms is heating up.
SBI’s Bigger Plan for Digital Assets
Yoshitaka Kitao, the top boss at SBI, said the deal fits the firm’s long-term goal. That goal is to link crypto exchanges across many countries. SBI wants to create a smooth network where people can trade across borders and different currencies without hassle.
The company plans to mix Coinhako’s user base and setup with its own tools. One key tool is the yen-backed stablecoin called JPYSC. This mix should speed up new services like fast cross-border payments, turning real assets into digital tokens, and on-chain finance that connects Japan with Southeast Asia.
SBI Keeps Growing in Crypto
While many old banks stay careful about crypto, SBI has been busy. It is working to buy Bitbank and build one of the biggest exchanges in Japan. It also led a big funding round for EDX Markets, a platform made for big investors. Other moves include tokenizing Japanese stocks with Ondo Finance and building a 24/7 payment system on the Strium blockchain with StarTail Group.
Singapore stands out as a key spot for SBI. The country has clear rules and strong growth in digital finance. SBI sees the whole region as a main base for its worldwide plans. It even plans to hold its first overseas branch meeting there in summer 2026.
