Recent work by Google researchers has changed the timeline for crypto security. They now point to <2029> as the year when quantum computers could start breaking current systems. This puts pressure on Bitcoin and other coins to upgrade fast.
What the New Research Shows
Two papers came out that explain better ways to use quantum machines. These methods need far less power than older estimates. One paper comes from Google. The other is from a small team with former Google staff. Both show that cracking keys could happen with much smaller quantum setups than before.
Justin Drake, who helped with the Google paper, said a superconducting quantum computer could crack keys in minutes. This is a big shift from past views that put the threat decades away.
How This Affects Bitcoin
Bitcoin does not use encryption for its network. The real risk is to private keys. If someone gets your private key they can take your coins. Old addresses are most open to attack right now. This includes early wallets that hold over one million bitcoins. Newer addresses stay safer until a transaction goes live. Even then the window is short, about ten minutes.
Adam Back has noted that some quantum ready steps should come in the next five years. The new findings make that timeline feel too slow. Action may be needed much sooner.
Steps Bitcoin Can Take
Simple moves include shifting coins from old addresses to safer ones. Bigger changes mean adding post quantum methods to the protocol itself. This kind of update takes time because the network moves slowly. Past debates on block size took years to settle.
Google papers suggest both quick fixes and long term protocol shifts. Other coins face the same issue. Ethereum has already shared a post quantum plan to stay ahead of the problem.
Why the Threat Feels Closer Now
The papers build on Shor’s algorithm from 1994. They cut the resources needed by about ten times. No working machine exists yet that can do the job. Still the math shows it is possible sooner than many expected. This is why the 2029 date now guides planning across the crypto world.
Staying safe means watching for new tools and moving coins when needed. It also means pushing for upgrades before any real quantum machine appears. The clock is ticking and the whole space must prepare.
