Coinbase CEO Warns Pivoting From Crypto to AI Is the Wrong Move
The world of tech is buzzing with talk about artificial intelligence taking over everything. Some companies that once focused on crypto are now changing their names and direction to chase AI hype. But the head of Coinbase sees this as a big error.
Crypto and AI Work Better Together
Brian Armstrong, who runs the big crypto exchange Coinbase, says the idea of dropping blockchain for AI is based on old thinking. He calls it zero-sum thinking that sees only one winner. Instead, he believes crypto acts like basic tools such as electricity or the internet. These things do not fight new ideas. They support them. Crypto and AI can grow side by side as partners.
Many firms added AI words to their names during recent market excitement and saw quick stock jumps. But these moves often do not change the real business. Armstrong points out that true progress comes from using both technologies at once.
Why AI Needs Crypto for Real Work
Soon, smart software agents will handle far more money moves than people do. These digital helpers cannot open normal bank accounts or wait for slow wire transfers. They need fast, always-on payment systems. Blockchain and crypto coins give them that speed. Without it, agents cannot act in real time.
Coinbase is already building tools for this future. They call it Agentic Finance, or AiFi. The company uses its own Base blockchain, the USDC stablecoin, and a new payment system called x402. This setup lets AI agents trade and spend money on their own. Recent tests showed agents making payments through Coinbase Business accounts.
Fixing the Speed and Trust Problems
Even with new rails for money, the full system must catch up. Current finance tools were made for humans, not machines. Agents need money that moves at computer speed. The same issue will hit areas like data and computing power.
Another big worry is safety. Giving an untested AI agent access to cash or wallets carries big risks. Builders say a missing piece is reputation and memory for these agents. You cannot hand money to code that has no history or track record. Solving this trust layer will be key before an agent economy can grow.
What This Means for the Future
The shift toward AI agents is not about replacing crypto. It is about crypto becoming the hidden engine that makes AI useful in daily finance. Companies that see this link will build stronger tools. Those that treat it as a choice between two paths may fall behind.
Armstrong and his team at Coinbase are placing bets on this combined path. They are adding features that let both humans and machines use the same network. As more agents come online, the demand for fast, borderless money will only rise. Crypto is ready to meet that need.
In the end, the smartest approach is to treat crypto as the foundation and AI as the new layer on top. This and approach opens more doors than any single pivot ever could.
